Danube River Guide
The Danube is Europe's second longest river, rising on the eastern slopes of the Black Forest in Germany and eventually flowing into the Black Sea via its delta in eastern Romania, a 2100 sq mile wildlife reserve which is home to more than 300 species of birds and almost 150 types of fish (both salt & fresh water). It has a total length of 2850km of which 1075km flows through Romania.
The Danube River was named by the Greek historian Herodotus "The King of the European Rivers" and it passes through nine countries; Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and reaching its delta in Romania
The Danube enters Romania at the famous Iron Gates (Portile de Fier) and along this section of the river you can also visit the ruins of the Roman bridge at Drobeta. In fact Rumania's capital city, Bicharest is only 40 miles from the city of Giurgiu.
Each of the countries has its own spelling of Danube. Germany (Donau), Slovak (Dunaj), Hungary (Duna), Bulgarian & Serbo-Croatia (Dunav), Romania (Dunarea) and Ukrainian (Dunay).
Some famous places of interest can be visited on a Danube river cruise including:
Germany - the Imperial Castle and the Justice Palace (the meeting place for the War Crimes Tribunal in 1946)
Austria - the Vienna Opera House or the world famous Benedictine Monestary in Melk
