TUI Treasures of the Main 2022 River Cruise
You’ll visit Bavaria’s biggest cities and tiniest towns on this cruise. Here, the hilltop castles wouldn’t look out of place in a Disney film. And the beer is world-renowned.
Nuremberg’s the second-largest city in Bavaria. So, as you can imagine, there’s a lot to see. Every single German king or emperor between 1050 and 1571 called its Medieval castle home. And its walled old town’s packed-full of churches. You’d never know that the buildings were reduced to rubble during WWII – they’ve been painstakingly restored using the original stone. There’s an A to Z of museums, too, including one stocked with 100-year-old motorbikes and another that’s set in the home of a 17th-century executioner.
You’ve got more time for some last-minute sightseeing in Nuremberg today. The city’s home to the Nazi Party Rally Grounds, which held some of the Third Reich’s biggest gatherings in the 1930s. These days, you can walk around the grounds and explore the Documentation Centre. This museum’s filled with photo and video exhibits on the 150,000-person rallies that were held here.
The ship draws into Forchheim in the afternoon. This former royal city’s one for beer lovers. It boasts its own Walk-of-Fame-style beer route, dubbed the Walk of Beer. The stars will lead you to Forchheim’s four breweries and the Kellerwald – a collection of over 20 beer gardens, or cellars, tucked away in the forest outside the city.
You’ll get to Bamberg in the morning, with all day to explore its UNESCO-listed old town. Back in the 11th century, this place was considered a second Rome for the King of Germany. And you can tell from its grand buildings – the town hall even sits on its very own island. But the former fishermen’s district conjures up images of another of Italy’s cities – Venice, with its pretty riverfront houses.
Today, you’ll arrive in Wurzburg – a city known for its extravagant architecture. The 18th-century Wurzburg Residence is top of the list. It’s taken 42 years to restore the palace to its former glory after WWII. Plus, inside, there’s a jaw-dropping staircase with a fresco by Venetian artist Tiepolo. Other highlights include the Marienberg Fortress, the Romanesque cathedral and the old stone bridge.
As you pull into Wertheim, it might feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale. After all, the Brothers Grimm based Snow White on one of the local women. This place may be small, but it’s got more than enough sights to keep you busy ‘til the afternoon. You can walk up to the hilltop castle in 15 minutes. Alternatively, stay put and visit the glass-making workshops, or stare up at the Spitzer Turm – a 13th-century lookout tower.
Today’s stop has Bavarian charm by the bucketload. You’ll arrive in the city of Aschaffenburg in the afternoon. Here, there are a couple of big-hitting architectural wonders. The 17th-century Johannisburg Castle – a Renaissance masterpiece of a palace with a huge painting collection inside. Plus, Pompejanum, which is a replica Roman villa with impressive mosaics. The ship will set off in the evening.
You’ll finish up your cruise in Frankfurt, where you’ll find everything from the world’s biggest stock exchange to an ancient sandstone cathedral packed into the city centre. Gloriously gabled buildings stand shoulder-to-shoulder in the reconstructed old town. This part of the city’s also known for its half-timbered taverns, where you can sample one of Frankfurt’s staple drinks – cider.
