TUI Rhine Christmas Celebrations 2022 River Cruise
This seven-night festive jaunt along the Rhine ticks off some big-name German towns. You’ll spend Christmas Day in Dusseldorf, and there are stops in Cologne and Mainz, too.
Your cruise starts in the town of Wiesbaden, known for its thermal springs and pretty parks. Palaces and neo-classical buildings are among the most pristine tourist sights, and the Kurhaus has an iconic casino that’s got ties to classic literature. You’ll have some time to explore, so don’t worry about clock-watching too much.
You’ll arrive in Cologne early, so there’s a full day to explore one of Germany’s largest cities. Don’t miss the gargantuan cathedral, which is the cream of the crop when it comes to historic buildings. A smattering of museums and galleries are part of the picture, too, and there are traditional bars and breweries in the charming Altstadt neighbourhood.
Modern meets traditional in a major way in Dusseldorf, and you’ll see the city at its festive best as you arrive on Christmas Day. Some bits might be closed, because of the time of year, but you’ll still be able to lay eyes on quirky contemporary architecture and half-timbered buildings in the old town. You’ll tuck in to a Christmas dinner and have time to enjoy the festivities when you’re back onboard, too.
The birthplace of one of Germany’s most famous composers, Ludwig van Beethoven, is on today’s agenda – Bonn. This town was surprisingly named as capital of West Germany after the Second World War, and has accumulated an impressive collection of art and history museums through the years.
Koblenz is known for being the town where two of Germany’s biggest rivers converge – the Moselle and the Rhine. And when you’re not in the park that hugs the meeting point of the two, the city has a castle, a military museum and lots of pretty fountains to look at.
In the morning you'll have a chance to explore Boppard, one of the region's prettiest riverside towns. The buildings look like they're on loan from the pages of a Grimm fairy tale, and among them there's a Medieval castle that dates back to the 1300s. You’ll sail on to Rudesheim for the afternoon and evening. It’s one of the smaller, more quaint towns on this itinerary – picture Gothic towers, time-worn castles and a medieval museum.
The cobbled streets of Mainz are like a step back in time – the city’s history dates back to Roman times. The cathedral’s built in a Romanesque style, and there are ornate churches and a marble city hall that are easy on the eye, too. In the evening, after spending the day here, you’ll sail to Wiesbaden.
It’s a case of coming full circle for your final day, as you arrive back in Wiesbaden at night ready for a final day’s exploring. Visit one of the signature thermal spas, or try a local wine sourced from one of the nearby vineyards.
