TUI Majestic Main & Rhine 2022 River Cruise
This itinerary is like a journey through Germany’s history books – you’ll sip wine in hundred-year-old taverns, tour Second World War sites, and marvel at colossal cathedrals.
Start by delving into the past in Nuremberg – a city of rallies and trials. This place was a favourite among German kings and artists. But it hit the headlines in World War Two, when the Nazis held their party rallies here. Post-war, it was the site of the Nuremberg Trials. You can rewind the clock further back at the castle and churches of the old town.
Unlike Nuremberg, Bamberg is one of the few German cities that was completely untouched by the World War Two bombings. It’s no surprise then that the whole of its old town is UNESCO-approved. You’ll have a big chunk of the day to stroll past its perfectly preserved half-timber houses, which perch along picturesque canals. There are countless breweries in town, too, where you can sample some of the area’s speciality smoky beers.
You’ll arrive in Wurzburg late morning. Check out its first-class art museums, UNESCO-listed palace and wine estate. Wurzburg Residence should be high on your list. This palace is one of Germany’s prettiest and its Baroque exterior’s trumped by a sprawling ceiling fresco inside. Other architectural gems include the Old Main Bridge and a huge Romanesque cathedral.
You’ll want to have an empty stomach for your morning visit to Miltenberg. There are plenty of cosy inns to dip into in this charming town. Gasthaus zum Riesen is one of the oldest. Its guestbook includes the likes of Louis IV, Martin Luther and Napoleon, so you’re in good company. Or you can tour the Faust brewery to the west of town. Nibbles-wise, it’s worth picking up marzipan or canned sausages – both are local specialties.
It’s another morning trip today. You’ll pull into Rudesheim early doors, so you’ll have until the afternoon to roam. Its narrow, Medieval lanes are packed with trinket shops and wine taverns. Plus, if you stop for a coffee around here, it’s usually sweetened with the local Asbach brandy. Or you can head out of town and ride over the vineyards on the cable car, which brings you up to a hilltop monument commemorating Germany’s unification.
You’ll spot Cologne’s cathedral spires from a way off. When you dock, you can head straight to the Kolner Dom to see its golden shrine, huge crucifix and intricate altar painting. You can also climb to the south tower viewing platform and admire the largest free-swinging working bell in the world. In the afternoon or early evening, there’s time to grab a beer – like how Champagne can only come from a specific region of France, the local Kolsch beer has to be brewed in Cologne.
Today’s stop has Bavarian charm by the bucketload. You’ll arrive in the city of Aschaffenburg in the afternoon. Here, there are a couple of big-hitting architectural wonders. The 17th-century Johannisburg Castle – a Renaissance masterpiece of a palace with a huge painting collection inside. Plus, Pompejanum, which is a replica Roman villa with impressive mosaics. The ship will set off in the evening.Canals and cafés are on the cards in the free-spirited Dutch capital. You’ll arrive early afternoon, with plenty of time left to visit the city’s museums. There are 60 in the centre alone, including the world-class Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedeljik Museum. Outside the main square, there are alternatives, including ones dedicated to tulips, eroticism and chocolate. You’ll stay here overnight, so there’s no rush to get back on board.
After an evening in Amsterdam, you can fit in some last-minute sightseeing on your last day. Spend it popping into traditional microbreweries, or snapping up some of the local cheese. The latter comes in all sorts of flavours, from coconut and pesto to smoked. If the weather’s nice, the mammoth Vondelpark’s worth a visit, too, for its preened lawns, cute cafés and tranquil lakes.
