Itinerary

Your cruise kicks off in Hungary’s capital, Budapest. This place is a grand old dame, with elaborate architecture everywhere you turn. The spires of Hungary’s Parliament Building and castle dominate the city’s riverfront. In the Jewish Quarter, meanwhile, the domes of its synagogues and centrepiece basilica pierce the skyline. The ship won’t leave until late, so there’s plenty of time to explore both areas.

This next stop might look like a quiet, rural town, but it’s got a big-hitting attraction. You can spy the 72-metre-high dome of its mammoth basilica – Hungary’s biggest – from miles away. Once here, you can climb to the top of the dome for 360-degree views, inspect the jewel-studded relics in the treasury, or admire the huge painting in the chapel. You’ll leave in the afternoon, so you can start your journey towards Vienna.

A capital as dazzling as Vienna deserves a lot of your attention, which is why you’ll have from early morning ‘til late evening here. You can see how the other half live at one of its dove-white palaces. There’s Vienna’s Versailles, AKA Schonbrunn Palace, or the Austrian president’s residence, Hofburg Palace. Plus, you can recharge after sightseeing with a hot drink at one of the city’s historic coffeehouses.

Welcome to the Wachau Valley – a stretch of the Danube known for its scenery. In the morning, you’ll pull into Durnstein, which is parked right on a bend in the river. It’s a chance to see Austria at its sleepiest – follow cobbled lanes past 16th-century houses and a blue-and-white abbey. But there’s an even bigger one at your afternoon stop. Melk’s gleaming 11th-century abbey stands proudly above town and wears a UNESCO stamp.

You’ll arrive in Passau around midday. This German town couldn’t get much closer to Austria if it tried – in fact, you can walk there in 20 minutes. You’ll notice Italian touches all over, too. There’s the Baroque cathedral, which houses one of the biggest church organs in the world, plus a multi-coloured old town with houses painted in pinks and yellows. You won’t depart ‘til the evening, so there’ plenty of time to explore.

Bavaria’s first capital is on today’s route – you’ll get there at lunch time and leave after dark. Regensburg dates back to Roman times, plus it managed to escape World War Two without any major damage. As such, it’s one of the best-preserved Medieval cities in the country, which is why UNESCO have given it their thumbs-up. In a morning, you can easily wander its bright-yellow town hall, 12th-century stone bridge and Gothic cathedral, or eat in its Historic Sausage Kitchen – one of the world’s oldest restaurants.

You’ll spend this morning in Kelheim, a small town with a big history. Everything’s quite central, so you can reach those must-see landmarks as soon as you dock – like the circular Liberation Hall, edged with 18 striking statues, and the picturesque old canal port. This town’s also a great stop for keen walkers. It’s surrounded by a rugged riverside landscape where historic monuments and buildings are stashed away among forests and cliff faces.

Your last stop’s in the city of Nuremberg – one for the history buffs. You can visit the grounds where the Nazi Party held their rallies and see the Nuremberg Trials courthouse. The former’s now home to a sobering museum, with stories, photos and artefacts from the period. You can also see how the city’s been painstakingly restored to its former glory, after the heavy World War Two bombings.
