TUI Bavarian Discovery 2020 River Cruise
This itinerary lifts the lid on Germany’s biggest state, Bavaria – a land of fairytale castles, Medieval old towns and unblemished countryside.
Passau’s the first stop on this cruise. It’s also known as the City of Three Rivers, since it sits right at the meeting point of the Danube, Inn and Ilz. A pointy peninsula houses its Baroque-heavy old town, with the onion-domed St Stephen’s Cathedral. You’ll also want to take in the views from the observation tower at Veste Oberhaus – the hilltop fortress that watches over the city.
This afternoon, you’ll glide into Regensburg for a few hours. Despite being in Germany, this place is often dubbed Italy’s Northernmost City. You’ll see why when you glimpse the colourful buildings in the old town. The tradesmen took inspiration from architecture in nearby Italy, which they’d admired on their travels. That said, there are some all-German touches, like the Gothic cathedral, a 12th-century stone bridge and a temple, which resembles the Parthenon, on the outskirts of town.
It’s another afternoon arrival today, as you reach Nuremberg. After Munich, this place is Bavaria’s second-biggest city. The metropolis – or rather the Medieval castle, in particular – was once the residence of most German kings and emperors. As such, it’s fit-to-bursting with historic architecture, including the half-timbered castle, the city walls and a glistening gold fountain. Plus, there are throwbacks to its wartime past, like the Palace of Justice where the Nuremberg trials were held
You’ll have a full day to snap photos of beautiful Bamberg. This UNESCO-ticked place managed to escape the Second World War relatively unscathed, so the architecture’s really something. The town hall sits on its own island. It’s a two-sided property, with a frescoed stone building and a half-timbered house attached to its side. Nearby, there’s an area known as Little Venice – picture waterfront houses with flower boxes and wooden window shutters.
Another of Bavaria’s prettiest towns is in store today. A wander through Marktbreit is like walking through history. Here, Art Nouveau architecture rubs shoulders with Baroque and Renaissance buildings. Down one of the cobbled streets, you’ll also find Alzheimer Haus – the birthplace of Alois Alzheimer, the man who’s credited with identifying the symptoms of what’s now known as Alzheimer’s disease.
It’s time for some city sightseeing today, as you spend the morning in Wurzburg. An eye-catching 18thcentury palace is the centrepiece of this place. It’s the Versailles of Wurzburg, with a grand staircase and a huge, gasp-worthy fresco by Venetian artist Tiepolo. Outside, the gardens are preened to perfection, too. The old Main Bridge is another must-see. Built in 1120, it’s considered one of Germany’s oldest stone bridges.
Your morning stop’s in storybook Wertheim. In the centre, you can expect to see your fair share of traditional timber houses. A 15-minute walk uphill, meanwhile, sits a crumbling castle. The next half of the day’s spent in Miltenberg. At 1.5 miles long and 150 metres wide, this place is easy to explore.
You’ll wrap up your Bavarian journey in Frankfurt. This metropolis is one part old, one part new. Its reconstructed old town is matched by a high-rise skyline. For traditional eats, the Frankfurter schnitzel is worth a try – it’s served with green sauce, which is made with herbs, cream and eggs. You can wash it down with some of the local apple cider, too.
