TUI From Amsterdam to Antwerp 2022 River Cruise
You’ll tick off some of the biggest cities in the Netherlands on this cruise, plus Ghent and Antwerp in Belgium. Expect some top-drawer architecture and tasty cuisine along the way.
Your first day’s all about Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands. You’ll spend today and tomorrow here, so there’s plenty of time to walk along the elaborate canal system, join the hordes of cyclists by hiring a bike, or splash the cash in cheese shops and vintage stores. Plus, your overnight stay means you can check out some bars in the evening.
Use your second day in Amsterdam to release your inner culture vulture. Hit the museum district – it’s a popular part of the city and is where you’ll find the Van Gogh Museum. It’s also home to the Rijksmuseum, where you can marvel at works by Rembrandt and Vermeer. Refuel at a snug café with a stroopwafel – two wafer-thin waffles stuck together with gooey caramel syrup.
Today zips you along to two more Netherlands’ gems. You’ll spend the morning in Dordrecht, Holland’s oldest city. It flashes a rich mix of monuments, museums, ancient warehouses and merchant streets. Later, sail to Rotterdam – Europe’s biggest port. Highlights include St Lawrence Church, which is the only building in the area left standing after World War Two.
A pick ‘n’ mix collection of beaches, marinas and Dutch candy stores are on the cards in Veere. It sits next to a lagoon on Walcheren Island, and is famous for its colossal storm surge barrier called the ‘Oosterscheldekering’. This barrier was designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea and is the most popular tourist attraction in the area.
You’ll dip into Belgium today by visiting Ghent. The city’s calling cards are its canal-side architecture and a booming Flemish food offering. Make a beeline for the Holy Food Market, an artisan food hall built into a 16th-century chapel. Or head out into the city streets for your pick of Medieval buildings to photograph – like the 12th-century Gravensteen Castle.
Antwerp’s on the agenda today. Perched on Belgium’s Scheldt River and dating back to the Middle Ages, this city of contrasts flaunts a flashy diamond district and lots of Renaissance throwbacks. Walk the Diamond Square Mile – it’s lined with grinding shops, exhibitions and diamond showrooms. Then head to the Grote Market, a square fringed with Flemish Renaissance architecture.
Utrecht’s like a chilled-out version of Amsterdam. As well as a pretty canal system, it’s got lots of quirky museums, including one that’s dedicated to old musical instruments and another that celebrates Miffy, the children’s cartoon character. Afterwards, you’ll sail back to Amsterdam.
Rise and shine early for a final spot of sightseeing before your flight home. Or, take the chance to fit in some last-minute souvenir shopping. Amsterdam’s busiest street market – the Albert Cuypmarkt – is the perfect spot for picking up everything from patchwork cushion covers to jars of spices.
