Lower Danube Explorer 2020 Scenic River Cruise
This leisurely cruise along the Lower Danube links two of Eastern Europe’s great capitals, Budapest and Belgrade.
Start your journey in Budapest, one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, where architectural treasures on a grand scale await. Immerse yourself in local traditions as you cross the Great Hungarian Plain and witness a skilful horse show before continuing on to Osijek in Croatia where you’re invited to enjoy a home-cooked meal with a local family. Your journey concludes in Belgrade, one of Europe’s oldest capital cities.
Welcome to Budapest. Your journey into wonder begins here. Relax and raise your glass to the days ahead at this evening’s welcome reception.
Make the most of Budapest with a guided tour. Alternatively, take a hike to Buda Hill or experience the labyrinths of the Hospital in the Rock.
This afternoon, enjoy the streets of Budapest at leisure, perhaps walk the hills on the Buda side of the city or cross the Chain Bridge and visit the livelier side of Pest.
Located on the Great Hungarian Plain, Kalocsa is one of the oldest towns in Hungary. Today you will have the opportunity to witness a traditional Puszta horse show. Be greeted by the horsemen of the Puszta region where this type of activity has been practised for centuries. Taste local specialities before watching this cultural masterpiece.
Explore Osijek on a guided tour or, if you’re the more active type, you can opt to take a guided bike ride through Osijek’s countryside.
As a Scenic guest, you’ll be invited in to the home of a local family for a traditional home-cooked meal and the chance to discover what everyday life is really like in Croatia. With great food and wonderful company, this is a rare opportunity to meet people who understand the local way of life intimately.
Overlooked by the dominant Petrovaradin Fortress, Novi Sad is a modern, vibrant city with a fascinating past.
Join your local guide and explore this energetic city on foot, or hike to Petrovaradin Fortress and learn about the powerful history of this military fort and how it has protected the city for centuries. Alternatively, journey to Sremski Karlovci, where you can wander the town with our experts and marvel at the many Baroque elements.
This evening, Novi Sad comes to life at a special event curated especially for Scenic guests. Enjoy a classical concert at one of the city’s most impressive venues.
Admire the scenery as you cruise the spectacular Iron Gates, a narrow gorge carved out by the Danube River between the Carpathian and Balkan Mountains. See the iconic rock carving of Decebalus, the last King of the Dacian Empire (now Romania). The sculpture is over 40 metres high and an impressive memorial to this once powerful ruler.
Raise a toast to a wonderful day in this grand location.
Enjoy an in-depth tour of one of Europe’s oldest capitals, Belgrade, including a visit to Tito’s Memorial, or take an orientation tour of Belgrade before time at leisure. Alternatively, choose a guided bicycle tour along the Danube or, for a true insight into everyday life in Belgrade, take a walk through the city with a local.
After breakfast, transfer to Belgrade airport for your onward or homebound flight, taking many wonderful memories with you.
