Keukenhof & Dutch Delights: Sound of the Movies Spirit of the Rhine River Cruise
Discover the music behind the movies as you cruise the Dutch waterways!
Spend your days exploring the cities and springtime sights of the Netherlands and enjoy sociable music-filled evenings with popular host Carol Anne Wells as you discover the important role of music in film. Your cruise aboard Spirit of the Rhine begins in Amsterdam, and includes excursions to Keukenhof Gardens, The Hague, the Kinderdijk Windmills and pretty Giethoorn.
There will be opportunities to explore Arnhem, Lelystad and Hoorn at your leisure, or join a variety of optional excursions. Throughout your cruise you can enjoy evening concerts and talks as you explore the film soundtracks created by celebrated composers such as John Williams, Hans Zimmer and John Barry. Your cruise concludes in Amsterdam, where you can join an included walking tour or canal cruise, and explore its galleries and soak up its café culture at your leisure.
Travel to Amsterdam – the journey from Calais takes approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes – and embark Spirit of the Rhine this afternoon. Enjoy a welcome reception and dinner on board during your evening cruise to Beverwijk, where you will remain moored overnight.
Set off an included full-day excursion to Keukenhof gardens. Spread across 32 hectares, Keukenhof is described as ‘the most beautiful spring garden in the world’, and here you can admire a variety of colourful show gardens and horticultural displays featuring many floral species, including tulips and hyacinths. After the day here, return to your ship, which departs at dinner and will cruise overnight to Rotterdam.
An included tour this morning explores The Hague. Set on the North Sea coast, the Netherlands’ third largest city is both the administrative and royal capital, as well as the host city to the United Nations, and features pretty town squares and historic buildings – such as the 17th-century mansion of the Maritshuis museum. This afternoon, cruise to Kinderdijk, which is home to 19 UNESCO-listed windmills. Built between 1722 and 1761, they form the largest park of windmills still in use in the Netherlands, and during your included excursion, you’ll see how a windmill works, learn why they were used and how they have been replaced by modern pump stations. You’ll visit the former steam pump station, Wisboom, as well as the historic waterboard house, and walk along the flood wall. Cruise overnight to Arnhem.
Arrive in Arnhem in the early hours. You can choose to explore the city independently, or join optional excursions to the Castle Gardens at Arcen, or the Arnhem Commemoration. Depart Arnhem late tonight.
Arrive after breakfast in Lelystad, a city built on land reclaimed from the inland sea, the Zuiderzee, in 1967. From here you can travel to the lake village of Giethoorn for an included city tour this morning. Referred to as the ‘Venice of the Netherlands’, Giethoorn features distinctive thatched houses that line its network of canals. There are no roads or cars in the centre of the town, so locals use punts to get around. This afternoon you can choose to join an optional excursion to Bataviawerf, or enjoy an optional wooden shoe painting workshop. Cruise to Enkhuizen this evening where you will moor overnight.
Enjoy some time to explore Enkhuizen this morning. You'll then have the afternoon in Hoorn to see the 16th and 17th-century town houses – the Dutch East India Company made it a wealthy trading town. There is the option to join either an optional walking tour or cycling tour. Cruise overnight to Amsterdam.
Arrive in the early hours for a full day in the Netherlands’ capital. This morning you can choose one of the two included excursions available. You can choose to meet your guide and take a tram to Central Station from where you will begin a walking tour of the Dutch capital. Along the way look forward to tasting local delicacies including herring, cheese and croquettes and rounding it off with a sweet treat from a bakery. Alternatively you can join an included tour of Amsterdam and see the Royal Palace on Dam Square, the floating flower market, the Central Railway Station, which is built on thousands of wooden piles, and the grand 19th-century Rijksmuseum. Your excursion includes a canal cruise to see the city centre, the famous Skinny Bridge, the Montelbaanstoren tower and the Jewish Quarter. This afternoon you may wish to join an optional excursion to Volendam, Edam and the Katwoude Cheese Farm.
