Walking Through the Romantic Rhineland 2021 Saga River Cruise
Experience the allure of the Middle Rhine by water and on foot. The beautiful Middle Rhine is the setting for your scenic cruise and walking holiday. Sail past castles, fortresses and dramatic cliffs, then step ashore and lace up your walking shoes to explore pretty wine towns and villages.
Travel to Cologne and embark Rex Rheni. Cruise to Königswinter and moor for the night.
Wake up in the pretty village of Königswinter and, after breakfast, join your included walk of approximately six kilometres. Walk from the ship through Konigswinter to the rack rail start for the Drachenfelsbahn. Continue walking up to the first stop of the train (Schloss Drachenburg) the oldest rack rail in Germany. Board the train which elevates at an incline of up to 20% and takes you to the top and the ruins of the 12th-century Drachenfels Castle. It’s famous as the fabled scene where Siegfried slayed the dragon and bathed in his blood in Wagner's Ring Cycle. On a clear day the views are spectacular. Admire the stunning views before walking back down the hill to your ship by a different route.
Set sail at lunchtime for Koblenz, passing dramatic scenery, the small island of Nonnenwerth and the ruined castle of Rolandsbogen. Your ship will pause in Remagen where you'll be able to see the remains of the old Ludendorff railway bridge. Perhaps join an optional excursion through the Ahr Valley, or stay aboard the ship as she sails on to Koblenz. Excursion participants rejoin the ship in Koblenz.
Koblenz has a rich history spanning two millennia, and its past is reflected in a wealth of monuments and historic buildings. The city is situated at the exact point where the Rhine and Moselle meet, and the city's name means 'merging of the rivers'. Enjoy your included walk through the attractive wine town before taking the cable car to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Pause to take in the views before your local walking guide will take you on an attractive route back down to the ship – the walk is approximately four kilometres in total. Enjoy lunch on board and as the ship sets sail. Moor in Zell late tonight.
There'll be a short time to explore the picturesque wine town of Zell this morning, famous for its Schwarze Katz vineyard. The town's idyllic location on the Moselle encourages the vines to prosper. Mid-morning when the ship sets sail, you will board a coach for a short journey to Traben-Trarbach with it's beautiful setting on the Moselle. From here you join the Bernkasteler Weg and walk through the wooded forests to Bernkastel-Kues, one of the most beautiful small towns on the Moselle. The total distance will be approximately seven kilometres. A packed lunch will be provided today. Bernkastel-Kues features colourful Renaissance houses which line the sloping market square with its 17th-century fountain. There will be free time to explore the town at leisure as your ship remains moored here overnight.
Early this morning, Rex Rheni will leave Bernkastel-Kues, and sail to Cochem, arriving early afternoon. With the romantic backdrop of neo-Gothic Reichsburg Castle, Cochem is understandably one of the most visited places on the Moselle River. After lunch take a short coach trip to Moselkern from where you will take an approximately nine-kilometre walk to the medieval Burg Eltz castle up in the hills, in the heart of the forest. After viewing the exterior, take the short walk to the castle car park where your coach will collect you and return you to your ship in good time for dinner. Sail for Koblenz this evening.
This morning, cruise the most stunning stretch of the Rhine, passing Lorelei Rock and numerous castles. The rock is a symbol of the Rhine and inspired a famous poem by Heinrich Heine, which was set to music by Friedrich Silcher. Continue to Rüdesheim and after lunch join your local walking guide for a three-kilometre walking tour of the pretty wine town and beyond to the abbey associated with Hildegard von Bingen the composer, writer and philosopher from the 12th century. Remain moored here overnight.
Enjoy a cruise to Cologne this morning and have lunch on board. Take a stroll from your ship to the centre of Cologne, where you’ll discover a variety of highlights, including the Cathedral’s stunning exterior. You may wish to take advantage of some of the excellent shopping opportunities here, or alternatively you can continue with your host to the beautiful Rhine Park – a walk of approximately three kilometres.
