Rhine in Flames 2022 A-ROSA River Cruise
Explore pretty Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle, before continuing to ancient riverside Speyer, one of the Holy Roman Empire’s most important cities, the following day.
Journey south to Alsace capital Strasbourg to step ashore and explore the city’s picturesque maze of half-timbered houses, before turning north and sailing back upstream to historic Mainz for an overnight stay.
Sail through the scenic Middle Rhine Valley and beneath the mighty Lorelei Rock as you head to the picturesque wine town of Boppard for an overnight stay. The following day your ship will join a flotilla of boats on the Rhine near St Goar. Take your seats on deck for a spectacular view of the famous Rhine in Flames fireworks display – the perfect way to round off a wonderful week!
Travel to Cologne, where you’ll board sleek A-ROSA AQUA at the quayside. If you arrive in time, why not explore the city under your own steam, with its 2,000-plus years of fascinating history, famous twin-spired Gothic cathedral and lovingly restored Altstadt (old town), before your ship departs in the early evening?
Once on board, meet your host, dine when you wish at the gourmet buffet and maybe enjoy a nightcap before turning in.
You’ll arrive at Koblenz this morning, which sits spectacularly at the meeting point of the Rhine and Moselle. A strategic stronghold for over 2,000 years, Koblenz is dominated by the imposing mass of the mighty Ehrenbreitstein Fortress on the far bank. Step ashore, where you can take an optional cable car ride to the fortress, or simply stroll along the riverside promenade to Deutsches Eck, where the rivers converge. Your ship sails in the evening, giving you the whole day to explore this special place.
At lunch you will arrive in ancient, riverside Speyer, once one of the most important cities in the Holy Roman Empire. Today, Speyer is still dominated by the vast, 1000-year-old UNESCO-listed Romanesque cathedral, burial place of German kings and emperors. Speyer is actually Germany’s oldest planned medieval town and a delight to explore. You’ll transfer back to the boat around 6pm to enjoy a relaxing evening on board, as you continue your journey south.
This morning you’ll arrive in Kehl, to visit the pretty Alsace capital Strasbourg. Head into the heart of the city, where you’ll discover and explore the ancient Petite France quarter, a maze of narrow streets of medieval buildings, criss-crossed by canals. Enjoy a full day spent exploring this charming city of half-timbered houses, before transferring back to your ship in the evening.
At around midday you’ll arrive at the picturesque Rhineland city of Mainz. Famous as the birthplace of the printing press, where Johannes Gutenberg printed the first books in the early 1450s, Mainz was also originally a fort on the Roman Empire's northern border. You'll have the chance to discover its rich history and culture on an included walking tour, and to explore the city this evening under your own steam.
Set sail this morning for the Lorelei Valley, for a spectacular day’s cruising on the Rhine. Head to the top deck for wonderful views of the valley and the mighty Lorelei Rock. Legend has it, the Lorelei Rock was formed when a beautiful maiden threw herself into the Rhine in despair over a faithless lover, and was then transformed into a siren that lured fisherman to a fatal end.
After lunch you’ll tie up for the night at the picture-perfect wine town of Boppard, known as the ‘Pearl of the Rhine’. Step ashore to discover this idyllic place, with its great Roman fort and its beautiful historic quarter, sitting on the southern side of a great horseshoe bend in the river, in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage region of the Upper and Middle Rhine. A treasure chest of historic monuments, as well as a major wine-producing centre, Boppard is as engaging and fascinating as any you will find on the river
Today the undoubted highlight of your cruise awaits: the spectacular Rhine in Flames experience!
You’ll depart Boppard around midday, and make the short journey upstream where you’ll moor just off St Goar for a wonderful view of the celebrations, which will take place later on.
The Rhine in Flames celebration dates back to 1756, with its inaugural event honouring the newly elected governor, Archbishop Johann Phillip von Walderdorff, who was staying at the mighty Ehrenbreitstein Castle in Koblenz. In 1845, when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited Koblenz on their honeymoon, they were treated to two fireworks displays as they travelled on the Rhine, and both remarked they were the best displays they had ever seen.
The tradition of a celebration of the Rhine and the communities that live on its banks continues to this day. Nowadays the festival attracts thousands of excited revellers to see the extraordinary sight of red Bengal fires on the riverbanks lighting up the sky, illuminating the mountains and castles, and creating a magical and beautiful landscape.
When darkness comes, the A-ROSA AQUA will be part of a fleet of over 50 ships of all shapes and sizes that sail as a flotilla as part of the celebrations, culminating with the music-accompanied firework spectacular – the grand finale!
Enjoy a wonderful atmosphere on board as you take your seat on deck as the illuminated craft move into position in preparation for the night sky exploding in a dazzling burst of fiery magic that is the unique experience of the famous Rhine in Flames – one of Europe’s most colourful celebrations.
After the fireworks, you’ll sail back up to Cologne overnight, bringing a wonderful week on the Rhine to an end.
Your A-ROSA experience ends early this morning, as you arrive back in Cologne, disembark and begin your journey home.
