Swimming Pools On River Cruises
Designed for navigating under low bridges and through tight locks, river ships are built with restricted width and height measurements. A typical river ship has four decks; the upper sun deck plus 2 - 3 lower decks filled with staterooms and public areas! Unlike an ocean vessel, which holds thousands of passengers, river ships carry an intimate 100 - 200 guests – there is typically one main restaurant and one main lounge… there are also no big fancy shows like you would find on an ocean cruise!
It is however becoming more popular to put a pool on top deck. Of course, you won’t find an Olympic size swimming pool on board – they are small in size, but perfect for a leisurely dip! You also won’t find a pool on board every river ship, some have a warm whirl pool/Jacuzzi and others have neither facility.
River cruise operators are becoming more and more innovative with their restricted space – Emerald Waterways’ newest star-ships have an indoor heated pool on Deck 3 with a retractable roof! In the same area is a bar PLUS at the flick of a switch, the pool floor rises and the area transforms in a cinema room.
Ama Waterways has a whirl pool on almost all of their ships and a heated outdoor pool on Bella, Verde, Certo, Prima, Viola, Serena, Vista Sonara and Stella – most of which have a ‘swim up’ bar within the pool – a great idea!!
Avalon Waterways are another river cruise line who have used their space well to include an indoor pool on two of their ships – Century Legend and Century Paragon! PLUS the following of Avalon’s fleet have a heated whirlpool on top deck; Creativity, Lumiary, Felicity, Affinity and Scenery!
Amongst others, Scenic Tours River Cruises and Tauck also have ships within their fleet with a pool and/or Jacuzzi on board!
